What made you start Prep Table?
I was tired of the poor conditions for chefs and over-priced dining pricing people out of the right to socialise and get good food. After working at a homeless hostel as a cook, working alongside residents to produce restaurant quality food, I wanted to spread the impact to more people.
What is the biggest thing you have learned so far since starting up?
All is not lost - people DO care and although one person can’t change the whole world, they can change someone’s world. Also that there are attributes and things I can learn that I never ever thought capable of before.
What support did you receive?
£5000 Start Up Grant from First Port including business support. Networking and mentoring from Social Firms Scotland, Edinburgh Social Enterprise and other experienced Social Entrepreneurs.
What is the biggest challenge you have overcame?
Being responsible for EVERY part of the business. Now I’ve gathered interest, I get lots of offers for help and have been accepted for funding to employ staff.
What would be your message to anyone young person looking to set up in business?
It may seem completely ridiculous and out of reach but you absolutely are capable of setting up a business if you have passion and drive. If you get yourself out there, there’s a whole load of help out there to support you to make it happen. You have nothing to lose - apart from your social life!
