Aleena had a wonderful career in retail in many different areas. Her love for design saw a move down south to gain an Honours Degree in Fashion & Couture but after graduation Aleena had to open her first store in her home area in the East end of Glasgow.

60-Second Interview

Can you tell us about the first £10 you ever made?
I made my first £10 at very early age. My mum brought me along to a car boots sale. I took along some of my old toys to sell and ever since Iv had the urge and ambition to work for myself and make my own money.
What has been your biggest challenge so far with your business?
Marketing and advertising is the biggest challenge for me and the business. Since starting the business iv been very confident in the products I sell and I know there is a target market for what I'm selling. However the biggest challenge is making sure all potential customers know about me.
Who is it that keeps you going through any tough times?
My boyfriend Craig . Its good to get a different perspective on idea’s and thoughts I have about my business. Hes good at picking my up when I feel down or if the shop has a bad day. He is very good at reminding my how well my business is doing. Its good to have someone who believes in you. As its very easy to give up when times get tough.
What is it that gets you out of your bed in the morning?
Definitely the fact that I’m doing something I love. Even when the shop is closed, I never stop working. Whether it be looking for new stock, thinking up marketing ideas/promotions or replying to costumers pretty much 24/7. Being my own boss, building the business to its highest potential and making a success of something I started from nothing.
Where do you see your business in 5 years’ time?
I hopefully will have opened a few more shops and have launched my swimwear label Fay Flamingo!
If you could give your “teenage self” one piece of advice, what would it be?
It takes time to build up a reputable, sustainable, long lasting business.The only advise I would give to my younger self would be to start the business earlier.I have made many mistakes in my business however I don't regret these mistakes as I have learned from them, i just wish I had made the mistakes sooner, to allow me to progress quicker.
If you could have any 1 person on your business contact list who would that person be and why?
Michelle Mone would be the ideal business contact to have. She came from the East End just like me, started from nothing and built an empire.Any advice would be so beneficial for a small business like mine. I aspire and hope to be as successful as Michelle Mone.
