60-Second Interview

Who was your biggest hero when you were younger?
Biggest hero has to be my Dad!
What initially attracted you to enterprise?
I love to create things and watch people use what you have created.
Can you tell us about the first £10 you ever made?
When I was in primary school we created a 'magazine' we flogged it to a group of parents. I'm sure they were just being kind, it wasn't very good!
What has been your biggest challenge so far with your business?
At Foodies we have had loads of challenges. That's what makes it fun! We have had it all, snow stopping all our Christmas deliveries in our hamper business, our industrial unit being blown up by a lightning strike... The biggest challenge though has been to create the team as you grow, training, motivation and realising everyone's ambition. Not every one has the same ambition as the business owner.
Who is it that keeps you going through any tough times?
Family have been a massive support from day one and my wife, Lesley. Our recent addition to the family, my son Hamish (5 months) is a great antidote to a bad day, he will always greet you with a smiling!
What is it that gets you out of your bed in the morning?
My alarm clock!

Not a massive fan of getting up early but once i'm up i'm OK. We have a bakery so the alarm clock is often set to 5 AM.

I get up in the morning purely for my passion to create and support successful business.
How do you define success?

If your not happy with the product you have failed.
If you are not happy with the profit you are making you have failed.
If your team are not happy you have failed...
Where do you see your business in 5 years’ time?
Foodies has many strands within the Food sector. Catering, cafe, wholesale bakery. We are currently developing our first Foodie product for export so hopefully success with that.

I would also like my Social Enterprise, Enterprise Me , which aims to inspire and support people to start a business to have a good following and some success stories.
If you could give your “teenage self” one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don' listen to your careers adviser!
If you have a passion make it a job.
If you could have any 1 person on your business contact list who would that person be and why?
My Dad!
