An Entrepreneurial Journey

  • Edinburgh College Students visit the Netherlands
  • First Erasmus Project for YES

Dutch Foundation of Innovation Creative Director Pieter Van Schie introducing the students to the Dutch approach to entrepreneurship

Week 1 of "An Entrepreneurial Journey" an exciting new partnership between Young Enterprise Scotland and the Dutch Foundation of Innovation has been a roaring success with 6 Edinburgh College students arriving safely in South Holland for 3 weeks of enterprise learning and practical working.

The students have hit the ground running taking part in workshops on "Brand I - how to promote yourself on social media" delivered by DFI and spent a day with two entrepreneurs at Area 071 in Leiden, hearing their stories and getting a feel for the workplace.

Left right: Reece Docherty, HNC Marketing and communications; Brendan Agnello, HND Electrical Engineering; Phoenix Megginson, HND Web Development; Caitlin Dignan, HND Accountancy; Rogerio Carimo, HNC Electrical Engineering and Natasha Ryan, HND Graphic Design.

The main lessons I was taught at area 071 is you never know who is in the building sitting next to you or in the next room. I walked in with the idea I want to go into football marketing within 5 minutes of our presentations I find an unlikely contact who has been successful in that industry leaving with valuable knowledge I will now need to take into my stride. I also learnt not to be scared of failure but to welcome it and take the positives out of the negative and failure is only a bump in the road and not the end of your journey

Natasha Ryan, a HND Graphic Design student from Edinburgh college

The week rounded off with the team of six being split into two groups of three todeliver two live marketing briefs for two Dutch companies, Social Media Savvy and Football Factory.

Checkback next week for progress on how they get on with their projects.
