Calling all college student innovators! Do you have a passion or interest to make an impact through business? Want to win a great prize package, which includes £500? Then this competition is for you!
Last year, Bridge 2 Business partnered with Future X, the creators of one of UK's leading celebration of purpose-led businesses, bringing together some of the most innovative minds of our time - Impact Summit!
Across delivery colleges, Bridge 2 Business brought students a variety of "Impact Fringe Events". The aim? To promote purpose led businesses, create in depth conversations and to generate ideas that could lead students into a purpose led business start up.
This year, we are bringing you the Social Innovators Challenge!
What is the Social Innovators Challenge?
The Social Innovators Challenge is a brand new competition for Further Education students who are currently studying at a Bridge 2 Business delivery college. Bridge 2 Business currently deliver across 10 colleges in Scotland!
The competition welcomes students who have an interest in generating a new innovative idea, that could lead into an purpose led start up business. Throughout the competition, college students are welcomed to participate and enter.
What's Does The Competition Involve?
Interested students will be welcomed into a Social Innovation Challenge workshop, ran by Bridge 2 Business within their college.The Social Innovators Challenge workshops will let students understand the importance of sustainability, and why start up purpose led businesses are important.
Within the competition workshop, students will gain knowledge and explore the Impact Summit main themes.
These three themes link into this years Impact Summit which will be held in May 2020, powered by Future X. The themes tie into sustainability, and the importance of implementing change & impact in the world today.
As part of the workshop, not only will students use the themes to generate fresh ideas that can be developed further, but students will also be given the basic essential tools to kick start their ideas, from business model canvas, marketing their businesses, video content and getting it online.
The main themes of the competition are as follows:
- Tech For Good
Technology has the potential to become one of the most effective and widespread forced for good on the planet.
- Sustainable Fashion
Tomorrow's trend is clothing that comes with a price tag we - and the planet can afford.
- Climate Change
Putting the planet before profit is not a trade - off, it's an investment plan.
Students will leave the session with more knowledge on the above, and have the basic skills to create a one page website, where they will showcase their ideas digitally, as well as how to create basic video content. If your idea is shortlisted you'll be asked to create 1-2 minute video, telling us more about the idea generated at the workshop.
How I Can I Attend A Workshop, And Enter The Competition?
If you are interested in attending a workshop and entering the competition, you must be an enrolled student at the following colleges:
- Ayrshire College
- Edinburgh College
- City Of Glasgow College
- Fife College
- Forth Valley College (Tuesday 17th March - Stirling Campus)
- Glasgow Clyde College
- Glasgow Kelvin College
- New College Lanarkshire
- West Lothian College
Workshops will be held within each of our delivery colleges by Programme Executives of the Bridge 2 Business programme.
Students do not need to be studying a business related course to attend a workshop, or enter the competition. All levels of study are welcomed.
The competition is targeted at students aged 16-30. If you are outwith the targeted age range and are interested to participate, you are welcomed to do so.

I'm a student enrolled at a partner college, and I want to enter the competition - what should I do?
If you know your Bridge 2 Business programme executive please get in touch with them, or check the map for their details on the homepage. Alternatively, you can check the "Events" section of our website, and sign up for a workshop via the link.
I have an idea already that I would like to enter into the competition, can I use it? Yes, you can use an idea that has not yet been developed past early stages. Ideas that have already been developed, or established are not eligible.
I don't have an idea yet, can still enter the competition? Yes, absolutely! The Social Innovators Challenge workshops are there to help you generate new ideas, and give guidance on how to take them forward into the competition.
Do I need to have attended a workshop to enter the competition?Yes. All students keen to enter the competition must attend the competition workshop. This is where you'll be given all the information on how to take part in the competition, as well as supporting your ideas.
Is there an age limit for students to enter?No. The competition is targeted at students between the age of 16-30, however if you are outwith this age bracket, you can still welcomed to enter and participate.
Do I have to enter individually, or can entries be part of a team?Yes, you can enter the competition as part of a team, or individually.
What are the three themes ideas must impact or relate too?
- Tech For Good
- Sustainable Fashion
- Climate Change
I don't understand anything about the competition themes?Don't worry, the competition workshop is where you will be briefed, and learn more about the three themes. You will also learn how to develop your ideas, and learn the basic skills to upload and create them for your competition entry.
Do I need an idea for each of the themes?No, you only need to enter an idea for one theme.
I don't know how to create or design a one page website, to showcase my idea?You will be shown everything you need to know at the competition workshop, as well as given a guidance sheet on how to upload and create! We will also be on hand throughout the competition if you have any questions.
If my idea is shortlisted, I have to make a 1-2 minute video about my idea - I don't know how to create a video, or have the equipment to do it?You will be shown everything you need to know at the competition workshop. Videos can be recorded on a mobile phone, or camera. If you don't have access to these, please don't worry, there is access to equipment.
If my idea is shortlisted, and I am invited to the Impact Summit to have my idea showcased, do I have to present it on stage?
No. Your video pitch will be shown on stage. You will not have to pitch it.
Will I be asked questions on stage at the Impact Summit about my idea?Yes. There will be a short Q&A about your idea, and what you learnt through the process.
If I win the competition, what happens next?
If your idea was selected as the winning idea, you will receive your winners prize package, and work with Bridge 2 Business to access everything.
